As a non-traditional graduate student working towards my MS in Community Counseling, and obtaining my LPC. I find it perplexing trying to obtain the appropriate mentorship relationship within the field of counseling. Often the terrain has been ambiguous; at one point there seems to be a connection until I present my views outside of the box pertaining to multicultural issues and the connection between mind and body as being a whole entity. Perhaps it is the environment that I am enmeshed within here in Oklahoma (retaining a conservative perspective). However, as a native Californian I am used to diverse perspectives of thought, and elaborating on progressive paths for delivery; whereas as a student in this program I am being encouraged to think on one dimension.
I visualize the concept of "SPA....Spirituality, Presence and Acceptance"; meaning the acceptance of authenticity and the uniqueness of individuation as well as collectivism. I am contemplating returning home (Ca) after I complete my graduate studies and obtaining my Ph.D.there. I am the co-author of an article regarding Mentorship which has been accepted for publication which I am very excited about.
With that said; I am seeking an advisor....mentor who is open-minded and aspires to embrace differing conceptualizations regarding multicultural issues, and mind-body connections. The profession of psychotherapy is a dynamic realm for embracing the changing demographics in our society for eliciting mental and physical wellness for client of diverse backgrounds.
